Much of the history of Garstang is hidden from sight.
Since Medieval times Garstang has been a key market town along the North-South drovers routes. Cattle have come from as far as the Scottish Highlands. The Weinds were originally lanes that linked the grazing areas for these cattle herds to the town and the market cross. Where you are standing now, would have been a main drovers route.
The residential houses you see today are early 18th Century cottages which formed part of the Common Lodging Houses in Garstang - very cheap rooms shared by multiple occupants.
